Want to Rank Number One on Google?
If yes, then continue...
The first thing we want to do is find out what keyword terms are searched most by our target market. Following this link to the Google Adwords Keyword Volume Estimator will help us gauge what people are are searching for on the search engines. The results will display advertiser competition, local monthly search volume and global monthly search volume. (It is advisable to make sure you gauge the value of your website to the popularity and competition for exposure. For example, if I were to start a diet blog today. Trying to target the search term diet to capture the millions of free visitors who search that term each month would yield little success due to the fact that there are over 10 million relevant and highly valued websites for that term. I may go with Best Diet For Busy People and try to take advantage of the 4,200 global monthly searchers. Over time, as your ranking and history become stronger, you can up the anti and keep targeting broader and broader searches!
When searching for potential keywords to target, the right hand side of the results column will give us an option to select the "Match Type":
Broad match: keyword (no punctuation) Allows your ad to show for searches on similar phrases and relevant variations
Phrase match: "keyword" Allows your ad to show for searches that match the exact phrase
Exact match: [keyword] Allows your ad to show for searches that match the exact phrase exclusively
Negative match: -keyword Ensures your ad doesn't show for any search that includes that term
